" He opened her door, helped her to the ground, and held
her before him. “You’re cold.”
Unable to meet his gaze, Kara spoke without thinking.
“N-no, it’s not that.”
His brow furrowed for a moment and then he seemed to
understand. He grinned, a sexy know-it-all grin, and ran a
finger down her cheek. “I’m glad I was able to provoke a
reaction.”
Her sexual frustration became irritation. She glowered at
him. “How is it you remain so unaffected?”
His eyebrows rose, and he gave a snort. “Unaffected?”
Without warning, he cupped her bottom, pulled her hard
against him, and she felt the unmistakable evidence of his
arousal. He was rock-hard, huge.
Her inner muscles clenched—hard—and the air rushed

He thrust against her, his eyes dark with obvious male
hunger. His voice was deep and husky. “Nothing about you
leaves me unaffected, Kara. "

Then Quintana stepped back, leaving Zach shaking, breathless, wanting to puke. Strangely, he found the pain easier to bear now than he had two weeks before. Perhaps it was just that he'd been through this before. Or perhaps it was the fact that his pain was buying time for the woman he loved.

And all at once it hit him- regret as deep and wide as the ocean.
Natalie.
If he died today, she would never know what she meant to him. If he died, he would never even get a shot at building a life with her, of knowing what it was like to come home every night and find someone waiting for him. Hell, he wouldn't even know whether he'd gotten her pregnant.
Then don't die, McBride.
Zach looked into the eyes of the man who was going to kill him.
I love you, Natalie. I'm sorry I didn't tell you. Forgive me. "
