1 " The first surviving Nicholas reference to which we may attribute a measure of validity dates back to the period of AD 510–515. The writer was Theodor, lector of Byzantium. His Tripartite History depends entirely on three historians of the fifth century: Socrates, Sozomen, and Theodor. Nicholas’s name appears on the tenth line of this AD 510 manuscript in Theodor’s list of participants in the famed Council of Nicaea: the 151st attendee is listed as “Nicholas of Myra of Lycia. "

2 " The Eastern Roman emperor Theodosius II (401–450) ordered that a great church be constructed in Myra, and it became known as the Church of St. Nicholas. "
3 " Michael the Archimandrite (814–842) wrote what is generally considered the earliest reliable account of the life of Nicholas. Both historians D. L. Cann and Charles W. Jones feel he is the one early source they can count on to tell the original unembellished stories. His is the first biography of St. Nicholas to survive down to our time intact. "
