" Too many people live as though affirming a biblical truth is the equivalent to having it in reality. . . It's terrifying to think that Hell may have no shortage of Bible teachers with good theology. "
― Francis Chan , Until Unity
" Like a marriage that has no purpose, many churches have forgotten the point of their existence. They can quickly focus on the complaints of their people rather than the cries of the lost. We get more emotional over Christians leaving to go to a different church than we do about people dying and going to Hell. Something is horribly wrong when we grieve more deeply over people rejecting us than those who reject their Messiah. "
" There’s a serious problem if the Spirit is grieving our division yet we feel fine about it. "
" In many ways, we have lost a sense of the true holiness of God, and that has caused pride to grow and fester in the church. Everyone seems to start out with the assumption that his or her opinion of God is right, rather than recognizing that all of us have an incomplete, flawed knowledge of God. "
" We get more emotional over Christians leaving to go to a different church than we do about people dying and going to Hell. Something is horribly wrong when we grieve more deeply over people rejecting us than those who reject their Messiah. "
" Many of our problems could be reconciled if we discussed our concerns on our knees before a Holy God. "
" When you consider all the divisions that have fractured the church into literally thousands of branches, it’s hard to believe that we all claim to follow the same Jesus who prayed before He died that we would all be one as He and the Father are one. "
" Rather than staying on the path to maturity (which includes increasing in knowledge), they take a different road that focuses primarily on attaining information. While they are increasing in knowledge, they are not growing in humility. While they are filling their minds with information, they are not emptying themselves for the needy. They aren’t leading others by living life with them and modeling the fruit of the Spirit. As a result, we have people who see themselves as mature because they know so many things about Scripture but their lives look nothing like that of Christ. They don’t take steps of faith, risking their lives and livelihoods for the sake of the gospel. "
" Being a Christian means that Christ has entered you, filled you with His love, and is pouring His life through you to the people around you. If you have experienced the life-changing love of Jesus, you will be overflowing with love for God and others. It’s that simple. "
" There are those who are interested in “going to church” for a one-hour service but have no desire to enter into deep relationships. This makes no sense biblically! The church IS a united Body. The more mature a church becomes, the deeper their love will be. Our misunderstanding of maturity has left the church immature. "
" Our lack of praise may actually be the biggest cause of our divisions. Once we stop worshipping, all hope for unity is lost. This is what unites us: we can’t stop talking about the treasure we have in Jesus. It’s hard to start an argument with someone who is on her knees shouting praises to Jesus, especially when you’re busy blessing the Lord as well. Many of our problems could be reconciled if we discussed our concerns on our knees before a Holy God. We can’t allow the Enemy or our enemies to interrupt our praise. Worship is our path to unity. "
" If you’re better at gathering crowds and securing praise than Jesus was, something’s off. "
" miracle was supposed to happen when the Holy Spirit entered our bodies: we were supposed to yield the fruit of supernatural love for each other. It didn’t happen. In fact, the opposite did. If there truly is one unity-loving Spirit leading us, it makes no sense that we are becoming more and more divided. So either the Spirit never entered some of us, or we have done a masterful job of suppressing Him. No matter how many Bible verses you know and how well you can teach the Scriptures, you have to be willing to examine the fruit of your life to see if the Spirit has truly "
" Perhaps this sense of purpose is what has been missing in our failed attempts at unity. As I said at the beginning of this chapter, when Lisa and I are fighting side by side for the mission Jesus gave us, it keeps us from fighting with each other in our marriage. A common mission brings oneness. "
" Our lack of praise may actually be the biggest cause of our divisions. Once we stop worshipping, all hope for unity is lost. "
" The Lord in His sovereignty chose for us to live in this time, so we must trust that He will give us grace to navigate through this with strength and love. "
" When love is shallow, all it takes is something as trivial as a disagreement to divide us. "
" Don’t try to comfort yourself with verses like John 15:18: “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.” The world currently hates us not because we resemble Jesus but because we don’t. "
