" Even truth can be deceptive, whatever its appearance. "
― Karl Jaspers , Tragedy Is Not Enough
" The battle is a collision of power, of gods themselves: man is only a pawn in these terrible games, or their scene, or their medium; but man's greatness consists precisely in his act of becoming such medium. By this act he becomes imbued with a soul and identical with the powers. "
" Life is illusion, disillusionment is destruction. "
" Tragedy occurs whenever awareness exceeds power; and particularly where awareness of a major need exceeds the power to satisfy it. "
" Truth and reality split apart. "
" Every truth that we may think complete will prove itself untruth at the moment of shipwreck. "
" Where all meaning disappears, and all certainty vanishes, something arises deep inside man: the self-preservation of his essential identity. This identity preserves itself through endurance - I have to face my destiny in silence - and through the courage to live and the courage to die with dignity. "
" A comprehensive philosophy of history should interpret the changes in man's condition as a meaningful succession of historical ways of life; in every epoch these ways of life account fro the general situation and the prevailing patterns of action and though. They do not replace each other suddenly. The old is still alive while the new unfolds itself. The mighty breakthrough of the new is bound at first to fail against the staying power and coherence of the old way of life not yet exhausted. Transition is the zone of tragedy. "
" Can truth be found? Is it possible to live with truth? All life-force stems from blindness. It grows from imagined knowledge, in myth taken for faith, and in the substitute myths; in unquestioning acceptance, and in mind-narrowing untruths. Within the human predicament the quest for truth presents an impossible task. "
