1 " The strength of a Brahmin is his knowledge, the Kshatriya ruler’s strength is his army, the strength of a Vaishya is his wealth, a Shudra’s strength is his service. "

2 " In indigestion, if water is drunk, then water is a medicine; after food is digested, if water is drunk, then water gives strength to the body; if water is sipped in-between while eating, then water is nectar; if water is drunk at the end of a meal, then water is poison. "
3 " A poor man is left by a prostitute; the subjects leave a weak king; a bird leaves a fruitless tree; after meals, the guests leave the house. "
4 " Knowledge is damaged because it is not applied; a man is helpless because he is ignorant; an army is damaged because there is no commander; and a woman is utterly ruined because she devalues, discards, and disgraces her husband. "
5 " The death of one’s wife when one is old; relatives controlling one’s wealth; and depending on others for one’s food; these three are disappointing dilemmas for a man. "
6 " After receiving fees, the Brahmin leaves the patron; after receiving education, the student leaves the Guru; burned forests are left by the deer. "
7 " What cannot be seen by poets? What cannot be accomplished by women? What does a drunkard not tell? What does a crow not eat? "
8 " By becoming friends with a person of evil action, or a person of evil vision, or a person of evil residence, or a person of evil reputation, one is swiftly ruined. "
9 " No fire offering is performed without the Veda; no charity is done without the act of giving; no feelings are felt without accomplishing anything; hence for all, love alone is the cause. "
10 " Among equals, befitting is love; a king’s service is befitting; seriousness is befitting in behaviour; an extremely beautiful woman is befitting in a home. "
11 " No god resides in wood, nor in stone, nor in clay; in feeling only resides god, therefore feeling is the only reason. "
12 " Fate makes a beggar a king, and a king a beggar; it makes a rich man into a poor man, and a poor man into a rich man. "
13 " Whose family is without faults? Whom has illness not pained? Who has not received some kind of addiction? Who is happy forever? "
14 " Behaviour shows the family, speech shows the country, mutual respect shows the love, the body shows the food. "
15 " For a daughter, marriage in a good family should be arranged; for a son, a sound education should be arranged; for an enemy, addictions should be arranged; for a friend, righteous works should be arranged. "
16 " The miser’s enemy is a beggar, the fool’s enemy is an intelligent man, the adulterous wife’s enemy is her husband, a thief’s enemy is the moon. "
17 " Between an evil person and a snake, a snake is better and not an evil person; for a snake strikes only when it is fated, but an evil person strikes at every step. "
18 " No greater austerity than maintaining peace, no greater happiness than contentment, no greater disease than thirst, and no greater religion than mercy. "
19 " The reason why kings gather around themselves persons of noble lineage, is because such persons do not leave the king in the beginning, middle, or the end. "
20 " Anger is Yama, king of death; thirst is Vaitarani, the river of hell; knowledge is Kamadughadhenu, the unending milk giving cow; and contentment is Nandan, the heaven’s garden. "
