" Manners hadn't been whistling Dixie about the disturbances in the cottage, however. He seemed like a stand-up guy, even good enough to warn me about the house before I'd forked over the cash. He was probably right about Johnny, and probably Deanna too, at least up to the point where she'd jumped. Boy was he in for a shock! "

" I wondered how in the world I could possibly sleep now, knowing a wonderful girl who loved me was just down the hall. Slipping into Johnny's pajamas, I figured I might as well see what Perry and Della were up to. The detective yarn was good enough to distract me from a million questions I had no answers to, and in a short while my eyelids grew heavy. I barely managed to mark my place before exhaustion overcame me. It had been the most eventful day in my memory, and that included the War. I had wrecked — though not seriously — my new Packard, bought a lovely home by the sea, met a girl who was supposed to be dead but wasn't, fallen in love with said girl, made a new friend named Carol, and went on an unexpected ghost hunt. I wondered what tomorrow would bring… "
" The smell of Jasmine was in the sea air. Any other day I would have adhered to the Victory Speed but I couldn't wait to reach the village. I smiled to myself, thinking what a stir it would cause when I drove through in Deanna's car; a car that supposedly wouldn't start and couldn't be moved. Poppycock! I wasn't sure about Johnny's plight yet, and it might very well be that that part of the story was true. If so, I would have to break it to her gently. Maybe that was another reason why she couldn't remember; it was so awful her mind wouldn't allow her to remember. I'd seen it happen to guys who'd seen too much combat sometimes. "
" Vera Lynn was telling me it would be a lovely day tomorrow as my new Packard wended its way along the winding shore road. The cool sea mist blowing in my face felt wonderful, a refreshing reminder that I was alive and life was good. It was a bright sunny morning, and the War would soon be over according to nearly everyone. "
" We enjoyed our newfound intimacy, quietly and tenderly adoring each other as Jasper kept hopping into his pretty master's lap to be in the middle of things. There is nothing like love when it is new, especially when it comes quickly, and out of the blue. How we had found each other, why we had found each other, and the otherworldly mystery surrounding our romance — much of which she was still unaware — felt unimportant compared to being in each other's arms and being happy that we had. There had been a time on a blood-soaked beach far away when I was unsure whether I would even make it back. To make it back, have literary success, and then find love, seemed unfair to those who had fallen beside me and made the trip home in darkness. Had that happened to Johnny, or were those in the village wrong? "
" I picked up the photo and studied it while Deanna set about rifling through her brother's chest of drawers. Physically, she looked the same in the picture, perhaps only a couple of years younger. Yet there was something perceptibly different about her in the photo that it took me a moment to decipher. She appeared to be much younger. She was smiling wide, her chin on her brother's shoulder. It was the eyes! They weren't vacant, but there was an innocence in them that only children have. It was that simplicity of childhood that made her look so much younger. She hadn't been burdened by the world yet, or responsibility. It was the look everyone has before they realize the world is real and not always full of wonders. "
" I heard it first. Footsteps. They were faint, and not localized in any particular area, but they were footsteps. The sound was like an echo from very far away. If they were the kind of footsteps I believed them to be, they were coming from very far away, indeed. A chilly wind blew past me and Jasper barked, which woke Deanna, who was by my side in an instant. "Did you hear it, Mike? Sometimes there's a cold."No sooner had she spoken than an icy breeze touched the back of my neck, as if someone standing behind me had exhaled. But no one was behind me. At least no one I could see. Deanna shivered and I knew she'd felt it too. The faint noises were everywhere and nowhere. The footsteps stopped, replaced by a different sound. "
