" Obviously, the first place I go is Sanctuary. The omegas scatter like flies as I stalk through the doors, pausing to inspect the fact one is hanging precariously to the side.
Bobo rounds the corner with a toolbox, smiling over at me before, he bows at the waist.
“What happened here?” I ask when he straightens from the weird bow.
He shrugs, and I remember he’s fucking mute.
Right.
Guess I’ll get answers elsewhere.
Leiza freezes when she rounds the corner and spots me.
“What happened to the front door?” I ask her.
She turns and darts inside a wall. Bloody hell. I’m not wearing an angry expression, am I?
I check the mirror, finding no major scare factor. I’m fucking devilishly good looking and my smile is positively charming.
Usually she’s less skittish around me. At least in recent days.
Shera is coming down the stairs, but she oddly pales when she sees me.
What happened to front door?” I ask her.
I’ve never seen my beta run so fast.
“I’ll let Violet tell you about it,” she calls over her shoulder. “Gotta run, Boss.”
Again, I check the mirror.
Good hair.
Perfect teeth.
Excellent outfit.
Not a fucking clue what’s going on.
Typically, I enjoy instilling that sort of terror, but I’m still in trouble with Violet, and she doesn’t like her Sanctuary members feeling scared in their own home.
I work harder on giving a wider smile and aim for looking like a nice vampire alpha.
Literally, everyone scatters and disappears, aside from Bobo, who starts hammering away on the door, trembling just a little after jerking his gaze away from me.
My smile falls.
“You’re all scared little insects,” I call out very loudly, feeling mildly insulted.
I think a cricket chirps, and it’s the only sound I get in response.
Rolling my eyes, I head up the stairs to Violet’s room. "

" The vampire’s smile is so bright and cheery that you’d genuinely believe he just found heaven.
“This shit is seriously fucked up. Stop acting like it’s so exciting, please. I’m internally freaking out because how pleased you look, and I don’t want to freak out so soon after giving my monster so much freedom. I…liked it too much.”
Arion’s smile only grows.
The more she talks, the more it starts sounding as though this is undeniably Violet.
“Again, you’re seriously freaking me out. That’s not a good thing, Arion,” Violet tells him with an abundance of conviction. “For whatever reason, you all think I’m so damn sweet, which means you’re all entirely too fucked up. But you can’t just grin after what you’ve seen tonight. Not even you’re that crazy.”
The vampire is falling in love all over again right in front of our eyes, because she’s underestimating just how crazy he gets when he’s in love. Unlike her, he loves being underestimated.
Obliterating an adversary, starting a war, dancing on a bloody field, and underestimating him…
She’s spent the last several hours doing all his favorite things. "

" I end up leaning on my sword for a moment, after exerting almost the last of my energy to take down one of the weakest Vampyres. Must be nice to be a Van Helsing, who can carry on idle chit-chat, while fighting like it’s a day job.
“I told you to feed more often—”
“I don’t want to hear ‘I told you so’s’ right now, you smug prat. I want you to kiss me,” I tell him.
“I’ll fucking die first,” he assures me, quickly knocking the head off the Vampyre, who damn near crept up on me.
After Vance does some fancy sword skills, clearly showing off, five Vampyres lose their head, leaving only two.
I stick behind Vance, shamelessly using the sword-happy Van Helsing as a shield.
“Should we discuss the ghost fanning herself right now?” I ask, as Emily slides up next to us, moving with us toward the remaining Vampyres.
“Pssst,” the ghost stage whispers. “The threat’s over. You can be cool again.”
I step out from behind Vance, adjust my jacket, and ignore the fucking ghost who thinks I have pride or something. "
