2 " The MAX made a stop in Old Town. Grandma nudged me with her purse. “This is where we get off.” I followed her from the MAX down an alley between a strip club and a Chinese restaurant. What? Your grandma doesn’t hang out in places like that too? "
3 " I was losing control, my body taking over and I loved it. Without hesitation I sat up, straddling him, and yanked my nightshirt off. Avery put his hands up to say stop, but then, as if he knew he was defeated, he reached out and brought me back down to him. I kissed his neck, my hands on his chest, pausing only to help push his shirt off over his head. Amazingly I didn’t hyperventilate; I was too busy feeling his bare skin against mine to even bother looking at him. I had wasted enough moments looking. He moved his hands down my back and grabbed my rear end. For a second I considered stopping and telling him that I needed to go home, that I didn’t know what I was doing out here half naked on a park bench. That I was sure I was going to hell for all of the things I wanted to do to him. But it felt so good. The headlights from a passing car flashed over us. “Whoa!” Avery clamped his arms around me. We lie there nose to nose, looking at each other. Avery covered in blood, an older version of himself, splayed out on the side of the road. He was next to a red pickup truck with its driver’s side smashed in. I was there too, older, screaming, holding my pregnant belly, kneeling down beside him. “Hey, are you okay?” Avery asked. I blinked hard and the vision disappeared. He was still holding my hand. How long had I spaced out for? It couldn’t have been long. "
5 " You’ve been with me this whole time? Through everything?” He nodded. He put his hand to her stomach and gazed into her eyes. “Everything.” Avery looked away, his dad’s comment registering. He dropped Mrs. Wells hand. “I’ll leave you guys alone for awhile.” He got up and went into the hall, closing the door behind him. He leaned against it, listening in on their one-sided conversation. “Yours, Mike,” she said. “Of course I’m going to keep it!” She paused. “I know. Paul and Becky will be devastated, not to mention the kids.” There was silence and then laughing. "
