Gerrit Smith

Gerrit Smith ran a land office, but is little remembered for his remunerative work. He was a philanthropist, abolitionist, social activist, congressman, and candidate for US president.
Smith was a longtime member and officer in the American Peace Society, and also worked for temperance and women's rights.
He is perhaps best remembered as one of the "secret six" abolitionists who financed the work of John Brown.
Smith wrote no books, but his speeches, sermons, letters, and essays have been compiled and published in various contexts.
His estate in Peterboro, NY is a National Landmark.
