Robert E. Lee

Son of Revolutionary War hero "Light Horse Harry" Lee, Robert E. Lee grew to prominence as an exceptional West Point officer and engineer during the Mexican War. In the Civil War, he commanded the Army of Northern Virginia of the Confederate States of America and accepted its surrender at Appomattox Court House in 1865. After the war, he became president of Washington College (now, Washington and Lee).
