Gorch Fock

Johann Kinau, who wrote under the pen name Gorch Fock, was often called the German "poet of the sea".

He grew up in the village Finkenwerder near Hamburg and his stories center around topics concerning his upbringing: the sea, sailing and the lives of fishermen. Later he also wrote war poetry.

Many of his works are completely or partly written in Low German, a northern German dialect, which makes them quite unique.
