Dena Tyson

A native from the Midwest also Memphis Tennessee who has released herself from corporate America and pursued her gift of writing and long awaited dream of becoming a successful author. Currently completing her second screenplay adaptation this time on her newly released novel –Black Beans ‘N Rice and is working in future developments bringing her novels to film. She loves to write drama and suspense stories that capture you from the very first page and lock you in to a journey you won’t soon forget but will find yourself laughing at the memories you recall.

Her muse took flight after winning 1st place with a poem she wrote in the 5th grade classroom (a member of the 4H-Club) at A.B. Hill Elementary School in Memphis Tennessee. As a child growing up although her gift for writing was unrecognized by her mother and father she didn’t allow that to stop her and she never gave up. At 14 years old she was thrown out on to the streets of the west side of Chicago by her sister with no place to go and no one to turn to. As a high school drop out she journeyed to make a difference in her determination to succeed later attending Malcolm X College in Chicago Illinois achieving her GED Diploma. Much later attending Northern Illinois Univ.

Before she was able to commit to her dream she also worked in construction as well as having worked in the medical field as a licensed professional in the Pharmacy. Now married 20 years to a wonderful husband also her assistant who overcame a miraculous recovery after suffering a stroke behind the wheel in the middle of rush hour traffic. Getting him through his recovery of more than 2 years ago now, she also became an Advocate for Stroke Survivors. When she’s not writing she enjoys creating the most beautiful dolls from her Kuckabug Collection of African Dolls.

Dena Tyson has become even more recognized now since writing her first novel two years ago and some of her appearances include –guest speaker at the Chicago Black Womens Expo at the McCormick Place serving on the panel for women who have overcome great obstacles in their lives and are still standing “Women Who Have Crossed Through The Fire”, featured guest author on WGN9 Midday News (a syndicated channel),discussing her book “Black Beans ‘N Rice” numerous guest appearances on Emmy Award winning television and radio host The Paul Lisnek Show WVON Radio 1690AM-Chicago, The Ron Jackson Show –WKAN 1320AM/Kankakee Illinois, WYCA 102.3FM/Hammond Indiana, guest author/speaker at Evergreen Park Community High School/Evergreen Park Illinois, Chicago Tribune Printers Row Literary Fest, The Author Conference at the Rosemont Convention Center/Rosemont Illinois. Her signings include various locations in major chains such as Walden Books, Borders in addition to Azizi Books/Mattson Illinois, Aurora Public Library/Aurora Illinois. Currently a self published author her books are available through Baker and Taylor, Ingram, and Bowkers Books in Print.
