3 " When I thought about that, I remembered something I have heard in church. We each have a purpose in life, and if we’re serving God, following him, living out God’s calling and purposes for our life, then we can have faith that God is leading us, and even difficult times can turn out all right. God can cause all things to work together for good. "
4 " While we can never do enough to show gratitude to our nation's defenders, veterans, first responders, and the families that serve alongside them, we can always do a little more. "
5 " One of my foundation’s main initiatives is to build smart homes for severely wounded veterans. We provide these houses and the land they’re built on at no cost to the vets, completely mortgage free. "
6 " There’s a message I want to deliver in this book: I love my country and I’m grateful to be an American. I know where my freedom comes from, and I do not take for granted the sacrifices of those who provide it. Because of that, I want to do all I can to ensure America’s defenders and their families are never forgotten. "
7 " After spending so much time with the grieving families of our fallen heroes, over and over I’ve been reminded that life can end at any time; that’s why we all need to make the most of each day. We need to make each day purposeful, and for the past several years I’ve discovered that much of that purpose for me is in serving and honoring the needs of our defenders. That’s why I’m still on a mission, a mission that ‘s the driving reason I’ve told my story. All my experiences—the places I came from, my years of formation, the people I met along the way, the mistakes I made and learned from, the challenges of my career and the ways I overcame—all my life has culminated in my ongoing service work. "
8 " In the years that followed, my faith grew, and I began to feel called by God to take greater action, compelled to use everything I’d been blessed with tho serve in a more substantial way. I wanted to create something that could be there for the long haul and, over time, do good work for others. My journey of faith had basically started with Moira’s need and our dark time. In hindsight, I know that God used that difficult season to deepen and strengthen me to be a better husband and father and to bring us joyfully together to faith. "
9 " I can most certainly say that what happened to our country on September 11 broke my heart and changed me forever. It forced me to rethink everything. What do I really believe? How do I want to raise my kids? What kind of example do I want to set for them? What can I do to give back to this great country I love? How can I use my good fortune to help? It was a turning point and marked the beginning of a new level of service. I found that the more I gave, the more I healed. "
