" It surprised me that I was already using the past tense. People I knew. As if I didn't know them anymore. "
" Zac dangled his legs off the edge of the building, hanging onto every word I said as though I were some old time bard telling an epic war tale. I tried to be as detailed as possible, and I knew that I was doing a good job when he'd lean back and shut his eyes. He'd breathe slowly and watch the pictures that I painted for him with my words. He'd smile, not a cunning toothy one, but a sincere smile that comes only from being truly happy. I'd sit across from him and just watch his reactions. We could be up there for hours. I would see the sunset across his face and be as captivated with his skin's changing colours as he was with my everyday stories. That's when I learned to dislike winters. "
" You're not broken. You're perfect. And when you get to get away from these kids, you might finally have a good man. "
" I have led you down a road of deception just to correct you and make you look like an uneducated ass "

" Not a day has gone by, he said. Poor Jos. Days had gone by for me. It wasn't that I had forgotten about him, I always knew that he was out there. It just stopped seeming to matter. I was already dead. I had already moved on into this afterlife. I was someplace that he could never follow, nor would I want him to. Poor Jos. All this time, and he has been the one trapped. "
" At least when I bugger-up, I do it consistently. "
" Since when do you look out for me? You really have grown up.""Had to happen sometime," I say. "
" I'd watch his smooth chest rise and fall with each steady breath, I'd watch the pulsating of his stomach when he laughed, and I'd never forget to make a comment or two about the wispy trail of grey fuzz that lined up perfectly centre with his body - and I thought that straight lines didn't exist in nature. "Look at that old man hair," I'd say, purposely trying to get a reaction from him. Sometimes I'd even run my hand over his stomach so that he'd feel it.He'd grab my hand to make me stop, or pretend that he was going to hit me as he laughed with me. "At least I don't have a grizzly bear ass like somebody I know. "
" Man, who did you piss off today? Laundry and kitchen? Just take the damn drugs next time, Blanky, you might live longer. "
" Unauthorized making of babies was strictly forbidden by Freakhouse staff, but that didn't stop everyone. "
" I don't think they like it when we're happy""Maybe they just don't realize that we can be, even here. "
