" Wow. When he started looking back on the war with Kronos as the good old days--that was sad. "
― Rick Riordan , The House of Hades (The Heroes of Olympus, #4)
" Whether Hindus or Greeks, Egyptians or Japanese, Chinese, Sumerians, or ancient Americans -- or even Romans, the most " modern" among people of antiquity -- they all placed the Golden Age, the Age of Truth, the rule of Kronos or of Ra or of any other gods on earth -- the glorious beginning of the slow, downward unfurling of history, whatever name it be given -- far behind them in the past. "
" Percy," my father said, " what exactly do you mean?" " Kronos couldn't have risen if it hadn't been for a lot of demigods who felt abandoned by their parents," I said. " They felt angry, resentful, and unloved, and they had a good reason. "
" Look around you, Ethan." I said. " The end of the world. Is this the reward you want? Do you really want everything destroyed - the good with the bad? Everything?" " There is no throne to Nemesis, " Ethan muttered. " No throne to my mother." " You said your mom is the goddess of balance," I reminded him. " The minor gods deserve better, Ethan, but total destruction isn't balance. Kronos doesn't build. He only destroys." Ethan looked at the sizzling throne of Hephaestus. Grover's music kept playing, and Ethan swayed to it, as if the song was filling him with nostalgia - a wish to see a beautiful day, to be anywhere but here. His good eye blinked. Then he charged...but not at me. While Kronos was still on his knees, Ethan brought his sword down on the Titan lord's neck. It should have killed him instantly, but the blade shattered. Ethan fell back, grasping his stomach. A shard of his own blade had ricocheted and pierced his armor. Kronos rose unsteadily, towering over his servant. " Treason," he snarled. Grover's music kept playing, and grass grew around Ethan's body. Ethan stared at me, his face tight with pain. " Deserve better, " he gasped. " If they just...had thrones-" Kronos stomped his foot, and the floor ruptured around Ethan Nakamura. The son of Nemesis fell through a fissure that went straight through the heart of the mountain - straight into open air. " So much for him." Kronos picked up his sword. " And now for the rest of you. "

" After a democratic interlude the " monarchy" returns with a vengeance, returns by the back door, camouflaged, masked and diabolically perverted—a blood-curdling metamorphosis we know only from nightmares or surrealist films. The reassertion of the natural father-urge does not result in the restitution of the paternal kingdom but in the rise of the Terrifying Father, a Krónos devouring his own children, who are paralyzed by his magnetic glare like rabbits facing a boa constrictor. "
" Nico strode forward. The enemy army fell back before him like he radiated death, which of course he did.Through the face guard of his skull-shaped helmet, he smiled. " Got your message. Is it too late to join the party?" " Son of Hades." Kronos spit on the ground. " Do you love death so much you wish to experience it?" " Your death," Nico said, " would be great for me." " I'm immortal, you fool! I have escaped Tartarus. You have no business here, and no chance to live." Nico drew his sword-three feet of wicked sharp Stygian iron, black as a nightmare. " I don't agree. "

" Hades," Kronos growled. " I hope you and the ladies have come to pledge your allegiance." " I'm afraid not." Hades sighed. " My son here convinced me that perhaps I should prioritize my list of enemies." He glanced at me with distaste. " As much as I dislike certainupstart demigods, it would not do for Olympus to fall. I would miss bickering with my siblings. And if there is one thing we agree on—it is that you were a TERRIBLE father. "
